Neck turning 1000 pieces of Lapua 6.5prc brass on Autodod

Preparing Brass for Reloading:

Reloading ammunition is a meticulous and rewarding hobby, and proper brass preparation is a crucial step in ensuring consistent and accurate shooting performance.

Unpacking and Sorting the Brass: I unpacked a substantial quantity of brass cases, totaling 1,000 pieces and this batch of brass is virgin, meaning it has not been fired before. To maintain organization and traceability, I plan to store the prepared brass in smaller 50-count boxes from Frankford Arsenal, labeling each box for easy identification.

Expanding and Sizing the Brass: The first step in the process is to expand the necks of the brass cases using a Dillon expander mandrel. There is an importance in using a coated or carbide mandrel to avoid potential issues with galling or damage to the brass. Using a lube is critical and when it comes to using a lubricant, I prefer one such as Imperial Wax or Creedmoor Brass Wax, to further facilitate the expansion process.

After the initial expansion, the brass is then run through a sizing die to ensure proper dimensions and alignment with the chamber. This step helps to prepare the brass for the next phase of the process: turning on the AutoDOD machine.

Turning the Brass on the AutoDOD: The AutoDOD machine is a specialized tool that allows you to precisely turn the necks of the brass cases, ensuring consistent dimensions and preventing the formation of "donuts" or other undesirable features. It’s important to monitor the process to ensure optimal results.

Storing the Prepared Brass: Once the brass has been turned, I carefully store the pieces in the labeled 50-count boxes. This storage method allows for easy access and organization, making it simple to retrieve the brass when needed for reloading or testing. Conclusion: Preparing brass for reloading is a meticulous and time-consuming process, but it is a crucial step in achieving consistent and accurate shooting performance. Using a detailed approach, utilizing specialized tools and techniques, demonstrates the level of care and attention required to ensure the best possible results. By following this comprehensive guide, reloaders can optimize their brass preparation and enjoy the benefits of high-quality ammunition.
